34 Reasons Foundation Was Established To Service Minority Students In The Inner-City Communities, Victims Of Cancer, And Student-Athletes. My Brother Kalen Berry, A Board Member Of 34 Reasons Foundation And Graduate Of Newman Smith HS, Was Diagnosed His Junior Year Of HS With Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer, A Student-Athlete As Well For Newman Smith. Currently Enrolled At North Texas And Volunteered With The Football Program (Football Support Staff).
For those of you who don’t know Berry, I can give you some background. Berry became a starting safety for Newman Smith when he was a sophomore, but in July 2013, shortly before the start of his junior season, Berry was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that affects the soft tissue.
There have been ups and downs in the cancer battle since then, but we can all wish Berry and his family the best going forward.
I got to know Kalen early in the 2014 season, when we talked for a while for this story:
The thought of 34 Reasons Foundation came from just having the passion for giving back and helping in the means of my control. I’m really big on outreach, Student-Athlete Identity development, and lastly, providing resources for those who need extra support to make dreams a reality. 34 Reasons Foundation is definitely growing with various partnerships this past year, overall the foundation is taking small steps, but meaningful, impactful steps.
